Supporting Safer Hypertension Care When ACE Inhibitor and ARB Therapy Overlap

Background

A 51-year-old male with primary hypertension was prescribed amlodipine/benazepril, which includes an ACE inhibitor, along with irbesartan, an ARB.

Using an ACE inhibitor and an ARB together generally provides minimal additional benefit while increasing the risk of adverse renal outcomes, hyperkalemia and hypotension.

What we did

HyperCare identified the concurrent therapy and the PharmPix clinical team evaluated it against guideline recommendations. We then contacted the prescriber and provided alternative first-line treatment options consistent with safer hypertension management.

The impact

  • Supported guideline-aligned hypertension treatment
  • Helped prevent avoidable renal adverse-event risk
  • Reinforced safety-focused prescribing practices

Clinical protection happens at the point decisions are made. PharmPix helps identify potential medication risks and brings clinical protection to the moments that matter.
